Two kinds of Portola Valley rentals

Most Portola Valley rentals fall into one of two groups. The first is contractor jobs: custom homes, foundation work and big remodels on wooded lots off Alpine Road, Portola Road and Los Trancos Road. The second is homeowners doing their own work, such as landscaping, a fence or a weekend clean-out, who want a restroom for a few days so helpers aren't trooping through the house. The town treats these two groups differently, which shapes how we schedule.

Private events happen at homes, too, and the town's Town Center on Portola Road is a community focal point.

Driving over from Atherton

From Atherton, Portola Valley is reached via Alameda de las Pulgas and Sand Hill Road, or I-280 to Alpine Road. The same team handles both towns. Atherton and Portola Valley are both strict about construction hours, so customers who build in Atherton find the Portola Valley rhythm familiar: weekday deliveries, mid-week service and nothing on Sundays.

What the town allows

Contractors in Portola Valley may work only 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. There is no contractor work on Saturdays, Sundays or holidays. Residents working on their own property get weekend hours of 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. So for a homeowner's weekend project, the rental is about the helpers, not a crew, and a single standard unit dropped on Friday usually covers it. The town's holiday list includes several Monday holidays, so check it before booking a pickup for a long weekend. On long contractor jobs we also ask who should be our contact for access, since many sites are empty on weekends and gates stay locked.

Portola Valley suggestions

• A single standard unit, delivered Friday and picked up Monday, for a homeowner's weekend project.
• A handwashing station when the project or event involves food.
• A restroom trailer for a private event on a level, accessible lot.
